The nature of social media seems to be geared toward sharing self-centered information. What you ate, how you look when you wake up in the morning, when your next book is due to hit the Amazonian shelves, etc. Interaction is limited to likes, follows, and on rare occasions for those of us who aren’t freaked out by it, comments posted in threads that are informative or insightful, thoughtful (obviously excluding the trolls among us).
The drive behind most social media forums is to promote the author / creator. I get that. I have enjoyed exposing myself in such a fashion. But today, I would like to know what’s going on in your world that you’d like to share. I’ve read the posts as they appear in my feed, but I’m curious to know what’s life like for you beyond the carefully crafted, edited posts. No, I don’t want you to air your dirty secrets, share personal information that has no business on social media (I’m looking at you, Kardashian(s) and the like) or anything that could be damaging to you in any way. I’m not trying to be nosy. Think of my request as more casual conversation between neighbors who share a cul-de-sac but haven’t spent a lot of time together. We showed up to the neighborhood block party at the pool our HOA fees go toward maintaining; we recognized each other from our past, random “howdy neighbor” head bobs, or hand waves as we’ve seen each other on the street. Since we seem to be the only two folks here we recognize, naturally we’ve gravitated to a table a way from the crowd. After the awkwardness of the, “hey, you live in the two story with the white trim right?” exchange of establishing how we recognize each other, we start to talk randomly about this and that. What would your random contribution to this getting to know you phase involve?
