Funny How that Works, again

Ever watch a woman who has recently gotten engaged? She is like a burning fire of motivation, determination, and in some cases, bullheadedness. NOTHING but the most extreme circumstances will come between her and the event that is to be her wedding.

I got to thinking about why that is and how I might be able to translate that into tools for my DIY Creator’s Guild coaching work.  Before I roll it out to them, I have to live it myself so here’s what I figured out (and will be testing all of 2016).

  1. Set the date and make it non-negotiable. On the flip side, though, always have an alternative date in mind…just in case. But no more than two. Three seems to allow for more slacking.
  2. Tell EVERYONE what the date is and what activity they are expected to see, attend, read about, etc.
  3. Gather your resources and where applicable, tell them your expectations, wants, needs.  If they are unable or unwilling to meet these, then don’t book them as a resource.  No hard feelings, just you have a mission and don’t have time for anyone who isn’t able to help you achieve it.
  4. Make and stick to your budget. List all fixed prices ahead of time and plan the rest of your budget around those. Save as much ahead of time for potential cost over runs as well as being able to pay things on time.  Be a stickler about getting what you need at the price you can afford.
  5. Do what you can to take care of yourself as you go along; the occasional manicure, pedicure, girls’ or guys’ night out, a spa day, massage, etc. or just sleeping in – whatever it will take to keep you physically up and moving, do that.

We’ll see how well I stick to this, having only been engaged three times in my life and married once (so far), I’m having to glean my insight from brides to be all over the interwebs. And no, I’m NOT looking to the Bride (and Groom)-zillas of the world. They take things to an entirely obsessive level that I just don’t have the energy for. But then again, perhaps if I did, I’d be getting more accomplished….hmmmm.

Oh well, something more to think about.

  1. That’s a great way to look at a book launch…or any project launch. I remember planning for my wedding day. I had lists and time frames, and since I HATED the idea of something going wrong, my goal was to finish as many things off of my list EARLY…so I could find alternatives to my original plan. Soooo stressful at the end, but worth it. (Hubby and I have been married for 15 years.) 🙂

    1. I’m hoping to apply that fervor and mind set to all my goals in 2016, lol. Perhaps I should look at tonight’s festivities as my “engagement” party? Thanks for the comment Juli. Here’s to a productive 2016 for us both (and another wonderful year of matrimony for you and the hubs!) 🙂

  2. Hello Dana, first of all the last time I heard your name used ‘Dana’ was in a song from my child hood, where “Dana was waiting by the telephone, Dana is waiting for the phone to ring”. This Dana with satin sheets, I feel wouldn’t wait, she’d get in and get it done. Just an observation.
    If we all went about the organisation and delivery of our goals using the bride to be’s determination we would be whirling dervishes of productivity. Thank you for the post I will attempt my next mission with this in mind. Pleased to meet you. 😇
